He was a graduate of the John D. Pierce High School, Class of 1934. Carlo then began a career with the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad as a weighmaster. He retired in 1976 after 37 years of service to the railroad. On August 21, 1987, Carlo married the former Audrey J. (Lockhart) Lillie, and together the couple established their home on Woodridge Avenue where they enjoyed tending their gardens. In his younger years, Carlo enjoyed hunting and fly fishing. He also loved music, playing both the guitar and mandolin, and Saturday evenings were reserved for listening to Lawrence Welk and Elmer Aho. Carlo was also known for his joke telling abilities, never at a loss for a funny story or amusing anecdote. Carlo was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, past member of the Audubon Society, National Rifle Association, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club, the L S & I Retired Employees Association, and a past member of the Marquette Short Line Model Railroaders. He was also the last surviving member of local Lodge #6 of the Knights of Pythias, an international, non-sectarian fraternal order that was the first fraternal order to be chartered by an Act of Congress.
Carlo is survived by his wife, Audrey; a daughter, Judy Britton; and son, Philip Willie? (Karen) Lillie all of Marquette; his grandchildren, Stephen (Kristi) Lillie, Brian Lillie, Scott (Emily) Britton, and Melissa Yelle; eight great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; a brother, Waino Wahtera of Rochester, NY; his nephews to whom he was especially close, Edward (Patricia) Wahtera of Breckenridge, CO, Kim (Sandra) Wahtera of Plymouth, Dennis (Dr. Fay) Seppala of Stayton, OR, and David (Connie) Seppala of Bastrop, TX; his great nieces and nephews, Tiffany (Ron) Montgomery, Kirk (Maury) Wahtera, and Jonathan, Josie, and Jean Seppala.
In addition to his parents, Carlo was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ronald Britton; a sister and brother-in-law, Hellin and Veikko Seppala; brother and sister-in-law, Kauko and Myrle Wahtera; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Wahtera.
